Data Journalism Awards and GEN Summit 2019
And the winners are...
During the Global Editor Network (GEN) conference in Athens last week twelve winners of the Data Journalism Awards were announced. We were shortlisted for best data journalism team portfolio (small newsroom) and we were honored to be listed with the winner Hate Crime Watch in India, by the organisation Factchecker.in (https://p.factchecker.in), congrats!
Der Tagesspiegel won the award for innovation of data journalism with their impressive project Radmesser: "This team ingeniously used machine learning libraries and sensors deployed on on volunteers’ bicycles to quantify and tell impactful stories about cyclist safety in their city." https://interaktiv.tagesspiegel.de/radmesser/
Dada Lyndell at RBC became the Young Data Journalist of the Year, she was involved in the story of how HIV takes more lives than car accidents in some areas in Russia: https://www.rbc.ru/society/11/03/2019/5c6c0ae49a79477703d915b7

AI in the newsroom
There were many sessions about AI, and not only for content generation, but also for editorial work-flow, with all the risks (e.g. biased data) and possibilities.
First of all, it should be noted that the term AI is taken to mean everything from text robots doing simple template generated content, to neural networks and various deep learning applications. Unfortunately, at GEN in Athens, “AI” was not always well-defined.
Maybe we don’t always need to use word AI and instead describe what it is about? When The Associated Press, AP, was introducing a new project about detecting events, they never used the word AI, said Lisa Gibbs, director of news partnerships at AP, and added: it’s just another technology.
What can AI do in the newsroom? Here are some suggestions from the sessions: real time transcribe and translate interviews, fact check, assist a journalist during an interview with context and scale up interviews. You can listen to one of the sessions, The Impact of AI on Journalism & Democracy, here: https://www.gensummit.org/live-coverage-15-june/
